Get active outdoors with other Tarheels at state parks all across North Carolina and start your new year off on the right foot!
Meet at the picnic area parking lot at the Mayo Mountain Access.
Hike the 1.8-mile trail, a relatively easy walk. The trail climbs a slight incline for about half the distance, then levels out and descends back to the parking area.
A park ranger will lead the hike, stopping to discuss natural features on the trail, some history of the area, and plans for the park’s future.
Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.
Have fun and enjoy the park!

December Library Event

The Madison-Mayodan Library is having author Trudy Smith back to talk about her book “White Christmas, Bloody Christmas’ Thursday, December 22nd at 5:30 in the meeting room. She will have her book half price and “The Meaning of Our Tears” will sell for $40. There will also show be a showning of the Documentary “A Christmas Family Tragedy.”

State Parks have many wonderful things to discover and explore from plant life to wildlife. But have you ever wondered about what lies beneath? Come out to Mayo River State Park as we explore the geology under our feet. The program will start at the park office. Then we will travel to the Fall Creek area. Wear sturdy shoes for hiking.

State Park Centennial Celebration at Mayo River State Park

The State Park Centennial Celebration at Mayo River State Park has been rescheduled for Sunday, November 20th.

There will be a fishing tournament that begins at 9:00 am.

OPENING CEREMONY at 1:00pm – Remarks from park administrators. Recognition of recent land acquisitions with an acknowledgement of the Piedmont Land Conservancy and Duke Energy for the roles they played in securing this land for inclusion into the park.

THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON – Games, a mobile environmental education classroom, bluegrass music by Hubert Lawson and the Country Bluegrass Boys as well as the Twin County Ramblers, hot dogs, fixins and drinks for sale, a S’more’s station, shaved ice vendor, exhibitors, and bounce houses for kids.

Highlight of the afternoon is free tethered HOT AIR BALLOON rides, giving participants a birds-eye view of the park. Begins around 3:30pm and goes until just before sunset, assuming favorable weather conditions.

Stars and Planets

Saturday, November 5, 7:00 pm – midnight

Have you ever looked up into the night sky and wondered what you are looking at? Come out and explore the constellations, stars and planets at Mayo River State Park! Volunteers from the Greensboro Astronomy Club will be on hand with telescopes to assist you in your journey through the wonders of the heavens. Meet in the field near the picnic shelter. Please use a red filter on any flashlights you bring.

Hike with a Ranger

Saturday, November, 12 – 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Come out for a leisurely stroll with a park ranger on the hiking trail. Explore the flora and fauna along the way. Meet at the picnic area parking lot at 1:00 pm for this program. Please wear sturdy shoes. Bring your own drinking water and insect repellent.

36th Annual Mayodan-Madison Christmas Parade

The Western Rockingham Firefighter’s Association is proud to host the 36th Annual Mayodan-Madison Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 10th at 1:00 p.m. The parade follows its traditional route – beginning at Elliott Duncan Park in Mayodan traveling down West Main Street to 2nd Ave.; turning right the parade continues on South 2nd Avenue/Highway Street traveling into Madison where it turns onto Decatur Street, then right on Franklin Street, then left on Murphy Street through downtown Madison.
