Let me begin this post by extending my heartfelt apology to those who have loved ones interred in the Mayodan Municipal Cemeteries that have been affected by the recent attempt to clean-up the cemetery. I, Town Council, and staff, take pride in keeping the cemeteries neat and orderly, we understand that the land is sacred ground and that generations of the Mayodan community are interred in them. Due to maintenance responsibility and propriety the Town has rules that are posted in the cemetery and are on every deed issued for a plot. Under the direction of the Town Council, I was requested to begin enforcing the Municipal Cemetery rules for the placement of flowers and other memorial items. I instructed staff to begin this clean-up – the employees who did this work were under my direction and I take full responsibility for their vigorous, if misguided, attempt to enforce the rules.
It has become clear that flowers were removed from the cemetery that did not meet the standard of “worn or faded;” because this standard was not adhered to this led to the removal of more recent flower memorials. And for this I am truly sorry. It was not our intent to cause distress or sorrow for families – and I hope that families affected will forgive the employees for their work, they were following instructions poorly given. Yes, the Town does have authority based on the deed and the rules to remove items, but this removal was not done properly.
The Town Council has been made aware of the situation and will develop a restitution plan for those families affected. In addition, there will be more clear instruction and rules established for employees regarding the removal of flowers and memorial items from the cemetery.
While I know that many may not know me personally, please know that it was not my intent, nor any staff’s attempt, to cause hurt to anyone regarding this issue. I can do nothing but apologize. We made a mistake, and we will do what we can to fix that mistake. I ask that you share this post with your friends on Facebook or other social media, this is the fastest way I know to spread the word of my apology and our effort at restitution for those affected by our mistake.
