Code Enforcement plays a vital role in maintaining the safety, appearance, and quality of life in our community. Our Code Enforcement staff work to ensure properties throughout Mayodan comply with local ordinances related to property maintenance, zoning, and public nuisances — helping to protect property values, prevent safety hazards, and preserve the character of our neighborhoods.

What Code Enforcement Covers
• Junk, trash & debris accumulation — improperly stored garbage, litter, junk piles
• Overgrown vegetation — tall grass/weeds posing health or safety risks
• Unsafe/dilapidated structures — buildings that are hazardous or falling into disrepair
• Public health hazards — standing water (mosquito breeding), vermin, sewage issues, unsanitary conditions
• Junked/inoperable vehicles — vehicles stored improperly on property
• Animal nuisances — noise, odor, sanitation issues from animals
• Noise complaints
• Outdoor storage of discarded materials
• Open burning — link to applicable burning regulations/permits
The Process
1. Complaint or inspection
2. Investigation by code enforcement
3. Written notice of violation
4. Time period to correct (note that it varies by ordinance)
5. Non-compliance consequences: civil penalties, legal action, or town-authorized abatement under NC law
How To Report A Violation
- Call the Code Enforcement Office – Speak directly with staff to report a concern and ask questions.
- Submit a Report Online – Fill out an online form through the town website for a quick, documented submission.
- Email the Code Enforcement Department – Send details and, if possible, photos of the violation directly to staff.
- Visit Town Hall in Person – Speak with a staff member and file a report face-to-face.
- Submit a Written Complaint – Mail or drop off a written report at Town Hall.
